John 11:43-44 “And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a
loud voice, Lazarus come forth. And he that was dead came forth.”

In the Gospel of John, the Bible presents Lazarus of Bethany
as someone Jesus considered a friend. Jesus wept when he learned of his
death. Jesus went to Lazarus’ tomb and
raised him from the dead. The Gib Singleton sculpture only shows Lazarus. He lies
on the bed of the tomb in his burial cloth. Jesus is in the imagination of the
viewer. Lazarus begins to arch his back and raise his head forward. The left
arm of Lazarus gestures out reaching and reaching. He is literally being raised
from the dead in the sculpture. Singleton s depicting Lazarus transitioning
from death back to life, going from one dimension to another. There is a look of ecstasy upon the face of
Lazarus in this sculpture.
