John 1:29 “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin
of the world.”

The Pieta by Gib Singleton provokes such profound emotion. A
mother holds the body of her own child. She gave birth to Him, but now holds
his lifeless body. The Christ is dead, hollow and empty. The Virgin looks at
the viewer. She Stares. The mother is dead too, but not physically. She is
physically alive but so overcome with sorrow and emotion that she appears
lifeless. Profound shock and astonishment are upon her features. No loss is
greater than a parent’s loss of a child. The viewer sees in the eyes of the
Virgin something so very personal. The viewer then understands and participates
in her enormous loss; a loss too big for one person to bear.
