Sean Connery is giving quintessential Bond here, featured alongside the first Rolex watch ever worn in a 007 film. The Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538, often referred to as the “Big Crown,” appeared on Connery’s wrist in the film Dr. No, in 1962. It’s even rumored that the watch may have come directly from Connery’s personal collection for the film. The striped NATO strap came later, appearing in 1964’s Goldfinger, adding another recognizable piece of Bond history to the composition.
The sailboat and icy scuba-diving scenes aren’t references to any specific Bond films. Instead, they’re scenes I imagined as part of the world surrounding this character: classically adventurous, dangerous, and romantic. They feel like moments Bond could naturally find himself in, moving between the elegance of a sailboat and the danger of a dive beneath icy water.
Together, the imagery creates my interpretation of a quintessential day in the life of Bond: adventure, risk, romance, and ultimately the reward of a long afternoon relaxing on the beach. Connery and the Rolex ground the piece in the history of 007, while the surrounding imagery allows that story to extend beyond any one film and into the larger sense of adventure that has always defined Bond.
