There are very few cars that are as closely tied to one person as the Jaguar XKSS is to Steve McQueen. Only 16 were ever made, and McQueen’s 1956 model, known as the “Green Rat,” became one of the most recognizable cars associated with him.
This piece is based around an image of McQueen leaning against his actual XKSS. What I love is how casual the photograph is considering the rarity of the car. There’s no grand presentation. It’s simply McQueen alongside something he actually owned and drove.
Then the piece builds around that image with the map, coffee and breakfast. Those details bring in this wonderful reference to the culture of driving and the open road without taking anything away from the historical image at the center.
For the viewer, that’s where this piece becomes really interesting. It sits at the intersection of art, automotive history and cultural history. You have Steve McQueen and one of the rarest Jaguars ever produced, but it’s presented in a way that still feels effortless and timeless.
